The luxurious Genesis G80 abandons the V8 engine but is even more willing to conquer the US

Genesis is Hyundai’s luxury division, and they remain keen to carve out a niche for themselves in the opulence segment against historic heavyweights in the automotive industry. Its latest creation is the Genesis G80, its performance saloon that now looks more spectacular than ever.

More modern aesthetics, new engines and the most avant-garde technology available from the Korean firm shape a car that at least at first convinces. It is not for less the effort, because it is the most important car for the brand.

Genesis G80: More shocking than ever

Genesis G80

At first glance, it is easy to distinguish the new generation of this saloon. The new Genesis G80 uses a design language. The curves practically disappear from the design and it is the lines that now take center stage.

Ahead a huge shield-shaped grill with a chrome lattice dominates the front. At its sides, the headlamps have been divided into two twin LED stripes with integrated turn signals and below it a continuous secondary grille extends from side to side.

The sides are marked by a taut continuous shoulder line from the nose to the rear and contrasts with a chrome lower trim. The side lighting stands out for the size behind the front wheel arches and the only thing that squeaks a bit are huge wheels (20 inches) with a design that does not quite fit with the rest of the car.

At the rear, the parallel lines of the lighting continue to mark the central axis of the design. Pilots in a horizontal layout, a very soft roof drop interrupted by a kind of ducktail spoiler (very much like a four-door coupé) and a bumper without stridency but with exhaust trims finish off the set.

By size, the Genesis G80 is located at the edge of 5 meters with dimensions of 4,995 mm long by 1,925 mm wide and 1,465 mm high, that is, 5 mm longer, 36 mm wider and 15 mm lower than the previous generation, with a wheelbase of 3,010 mm, which places it. It is slightly larger than a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or Audi A6.

Inside there is also a generational leap. Used materials higher quality (wood, leather or aluminum), used air adjustment seats vary depending on the selected driving mode and with a specific function to reduce fatigue during long trips.

The dashboard is 100% digital with three-dimensional graphics on a 12.3-inch screen, while a second 14.5-inch screen emerges on the dash for the infotainment system. It has over-the-air updates and connectivity with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The dashboard is complemented by a Head-Up Display on the glass, while the gear selector is a rotary control on the console. To improve the feeling of space, the A-pillars have been narrowed and the bench is placed lower at the rear.

At the core of the Genesis G80 hides a whole new platform shared with the Genesis GV80. The new chassis is made of 19% aluminum, is 110 kg lighter and uses rear-wheel drive, in addition to using an electronically controlled suspension scheme.

At the motorization level, the Genesis G80 is downsized, leaving the V8 engine aside to now use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline that develops 304 hp and 421 Nm or a more powerful second option in the form of a 3.5 hp 380 hp and 530 Nm of torque. In some markets there will also be available a 2.2 four-cylinder diesel with 210 hp and 441 Nm.

Technology has also made its way in the G80 with the Highway Driving Assist II, or what is the same, lane keeping assistant with adaptive cruise control. It also includes emergency braking assistant, pedestrian detection, blind spot assistant or remote parking function.
